Report a Scam Call

The fastest way to fight phone scams is to report them to the federal agencies that investigate and shut them down.

Where to report a scam call

If the call you received included a threat, demanded payment in gift cards or wire transfer, or asked you to verify a Social Security number, report it directly to:

  • FTC — reportfraud.ftc.gov (all scam and fraud calls)
  • IRS — phishing@irs.gov (for IRS impersonation)
  • SSA OIG — oig.ssa.gov/report (for Social Security impersonation)
  • FCC — consumercomplaints.fcc.gov (for unwanted robocalls and spoofing)

What to include in your report

The details that matter most to investigators: the phone number that called you, the date and approximate time of the call, what agency the caller claimed to represent, and what they asked for. Never include your own Social Security number, bank details, or other personal financial information in a report.

Check the directory before you call back

Before returning a missed call from an unknown number, look it up here first. Every number page shows community-submitted reports, the impersonated agency, and a risk score. Start from the directory home, browse scam categories, or check the most-reported numbers and recent activity.
